World HABITAT day Celebration Sri Lanka 2017

The first Monday of October of every year was declared as World Habitat Day and this year’s World Habitat Day was celebrated at the Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium in  Matara on 02.10.2017 under the patronage of Hon.Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing and Construction with the distinguished participation of Hon.Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Finance and Mass Media, Hon.Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana, Sate Minister of Public Enterprise Development, Hon.Buddhika Pathirana, Member of Parliament for Matara District and the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Construction, Dr. Chanaka Thalpahewa, Programme Manager of Sri Lanka of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlement Programme) and  the Chairman and the General Manager of  National Housing Development Authority including many public officials.

This event also featured handing over of scattered housing loan valued at Rs. 100 Million to 1000 low income families of the area, distribution of Occupational tool kits, uniforms and subjects related text books amounted to Rs.3.8 Million to 100 youths selected for the construction training under “Shilpa Saviya”, awarding of professional certificates for 133 youths who completed the course coming under the “Shilpa Saviya” Programme, granting of “Semata Sevana – Sonduru Piyasa” cheques amounting to Rs. 24.6 Million to 123 beneficiaries, granting of “ Semata Sevana ” aids valuable Rs. 19.4 Million to 50 beneficiaries, giving title deeds to 116 families, granting of “Virusumithuru” aids totaling to Rs. 13.3 Million to 25 beneficiaries, handing over of prizes and certificates to winning children for all island arts and essay competition held by the National Housing Development Authority, awarding of prizes and certificates for winners of arts, dramas and essay competitions held by Urban Settlement Development Authority and donation of a house worth of Rs. 4.2 Million from the “Sayurupura” housing complex , Angulana, Moratuwa  for the Sportsman, Manjula Kumara resides at Morawaka in Matara District who achieved victories in the high jump event at national and international level.

The World Habitat Day which was declared by the United Nations Organization in 1985 is celebrated the first Monday of the month of October of every year since 1986. The theme of this year’s World Habitat Day which fell on 02nd October is   “Housing Policy: Affordable Homes”.
