During the year 2016, the Ministry of Housing and Construction contributed to a series of international activities on housing and settlement. The formulation of Sri Lanka’s national report to be submitted to Habitat iii international conference sponsored by the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development held in line with bi-decennial cycle was carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Housing and Construction with the support of the institutions affiliated to the Ministry and with contributions made by the professionals in the field of settlement
Two preparatory meetings of Habitat iii were held in New York, USA and Surabaya, Indonesia and the Sri Lankan delegation played an active role in the deliberations. Habitat iii international conference was held in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016 and the Sri Lankan delegation to the summit was led by the Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction, Hon. Indika Bandaranayake.
The bi-decennial conference had, as its mission, the adoption of a New Urban Agenda—an action-oriented document which will set global standards of achievement in sustainable urban development and the Sri Lankan delegation made a presentation outlining housing development activities implemented in the country during the past 20 years from the time Habitat ii was held in Istanbul, Turkey.
Housing and settlement development activities carried out in Sri Lanka with participatory housing development as core strategy was highlighted at the conference and the deliberations of the conference focused mainly on addressing
the widening gap between urban and rural development activities and financial management in housing and settlement process.Parallel to the above conference, preparatory meeting of the housing ministers of the Asia Pacific region was held in preparation of the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development to be held in New Delhi in December 2016 and Sri Lankan delegation at this ministerial meeting was headed by the Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction.
The year 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of International Year of Housing. With the aim of drawing international attention to ’Shelter for All’ housing programme being implemented in Sri Lanka, an international housing conference is expected to be held in Sri Lanka.
A host of preparative activities in regard to the said conference are taking place in 2016.
